Below you’ll find links to a number of fellowships or scholarships for which you may apply to assist in financing your international study. Some may be available only to students who fit certain criteria (a particular major or location, for example), so please read the information carefully prior to applying.

GILMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving federal Pell Grant funding at a 2-year or 4-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide. April and October deadlines.

FULBRIGHT SCHOLARSHIPS

This is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. It is the largest U.S. international exchange program offering opportunities for students, scholars, and professionals to undertake international graduate study, advanced research, university teaching, and teaching in elementary and secondary schools worldwide.

CIEE STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS FOR EDUCATION ABROAD

The CIEE Student Scholarship Program awards scholarships and grants to students who plan to study overseas. An applicant must have matriculated at a college or university for at least one semester.

NSEP DAVID L. BOREN UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS

Boren Undergraduate Scholarships provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to add an important international and language component to their education. The program focuses on geographic areas, languages, and fields of study that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in Study Abroad (such as in Africa, Asia, Central, and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East). January deadline.

GLIMPSE ABROAD CORRESPONDENTS PROGRAM

A $600 stipend will be awarded to a talented writer and photographer between the ages of 18 and 36 who will be studying, working, or volunteering abroad for at least 10 weeks. Correspondents will submit stories to Glimpse for guaranteed publication and will have support from a team of professional editors.

ROTARY AMBASSADORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS

The Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarships program offers several types of scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students as well as qualified professionals pursuing vocational studies. The applicant will serve as a goodwill ambassador to a host country and give presentations about their homeland. Upon their return, they will share their experiences with Rotarians and others. Contact your local Rotary club or the Director of Education Abroad for further details.

WOODROW WILSON NATIONAL FELLOWSHIP FOUNDATION

This foundation offers scholarship information for students interested in pursuing a foreign service career with the U.S. Department of State. It also offers scholarships for teachers who want to get involved in high-need schools.

FUND FOR EDUCATION ABROAD (FEA)

FEA was created in order to open doors for deserving education abroad students. FEA awards funds for students planning to study abroad on any academically rigorous program. FEA scholarships are intended to meet the financial needs of students who might not be eligible for government grants or existing funds limited to specific programs or groups of students. Like the Rotary, this scholarship requires a long lead time.

GERMAN ACADEMIC EXCHANGE PROGRAM

The German Academic Exchange Program offers scholarship opportunities to students, scholars, and higher education institutions of the United States and Canada, from undergraduates to faculty, to study and research in Germany.

FREEMAN-ASIA SCHOLARSHIPS

This program’s goal is to increase the number of U.S. undergraduates who study in East and Southeast Asia by providing them with the information and financial assistance they will need. The applicant must be pursuing his/her first bachelor’s degree and must be in good standing with his/her university.

MONBUKAGAKUSHO SCHOLARSHIPS FOR STUDY IN JAPAN

This program offers scholarships to international students, providing hundreds with the opportunity to live and study in Japan. There are five types of Monbukagakusho scholarships offering awards to high school, undergraduate, and graduate students, as well as teachers.

BLAKEMORE ASIAN LANGUAGE FELLOWSHIPS

The Blakemore Asian Language Fellowships program funds a year of advanced study of an Asian language in Asia for American citizens and permanent residents of the United States who have a degree and who plan to use an Asian language in their careers.

BRITISH COUNCIL — FUNDING YOUR STUDY IN THE UK

This scholarship database lists scholarships just for U.S. citizens who want to do a full degree in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, or Wales.

BRITISH UNIVERSITIES TRANSATLANTIC EXCHANGE ASSOCIATION

Scholarships are awarded to North American students who study abroad at a United Kingdom University that is a member of BUTEX.

IIE-INSTITUTION OF INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION

The IIE offers a lot of information about scholarships for people who are interested in studying and teaching abroad. It also offers information for non-U.S. citizens, educators, and other professionals.
